CVE-2008-2476

The IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) implementation in (1) FreeBSD 6.3 through 7.1, (2) OpenBSD 4.2 and 4.3, (3) NetBSD, (4) Force10 FTOS before E7.7.1.1, (5) Juniper JUNOS, and (6) Wind River VxWorks 5.x through 6.4 does not validate the origin of Neighbor Discovery messages, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (loss of connectivity) or read private network traffic via a spoofed message that modifies the Forward Information Base (FIB).

Security Impact Summary

CVE-2008-2476 is a security vulnerability that . Impacting 6 products from force10, from freebsd, from juniper and 3 others, organizations running these solutions should prioritize assessment and patching.

Historical Context

Originally identified in 2008, this vulnerability predates many modern security frameworks and practices. The vulnerability landscape of that era was characterized by different threat models and less mature defense mechanisms compared to contemporary standards.

How SecUtils Interprets This CVE

SecUtils normalizes and enriches National Vulnerability Database (NVD) records by standardizing vendor and product identifiers, aggregating vulnerability metadata from both NVD and MITRE sources, and providing structured context for security teams. For force10's affected products, we extract Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) data, Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) classifications, CVSS severity metrics, and reference data to enable rapid vulnerability prioritization and asset correlation. This record contains no exploit code, proof-of-concept instructions, or attack methodologies—only defensive intelligence necessary for patch management, risk assessment, and security operations.
