CVE-2024-39553

An Exposure of Resource to Wrong Sphere vulnerability in the sampling service of Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved allows an unauthenticated network-based attacker to send arbitrary data to the device, which leads msvcsd process to crash with limited availability impacting Denial of Service (DoS) and allows unauthorized network access to the device, potentially impacting system integrity. This issue only happens when inline jflow is configured. This does not impact any forwarding traffic. The impacted services MSVCS-DB app crashes momentarily and recovers by itself.  This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved:  * 21.4 versions earlier than 21.4R3-S7-EVO;  * 22.2 versions earlier than 22.2R3-S3-EVO; * 22.3 versions earlier than 22.3R3-S2-EVO; * 22.4 versions earlier than 22.4R3-EVO; * 23.2 versions earlier than 23.2R1-S2-EVO, 23.2R2-EVO.

Security Impact Summary

This vulnerability carries a MEDIUM severity rating with a CVSS v3.1 score of 6.5, indicating it can be exploited remotely over the network with relatively low complexity without requiring user interaction and does not require pre-existing privileges . The vulnerability impacts limited integrity, and limited availability for affected systems. Impacting 1 product from juniper organizations running these solutions should prioritize assessment and patching.

Historical Context

Reported in 2024, this vulnerability emerged during an era marked by increased sophistication in supply chain attacks, cloud infrastructure vulnerabilities, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) security challenges. Security practices during this period emphasized zero-trust architectures, container security, and API protection.

How SecUtils Interprets This CVE

SecUtils normalizes and enriches National Vulnerability Database (NVD) records by standardizing vendor and product identifiers, aggregating vulnerability metadata from both NVD and MITRE sources, and providing structured context for security teams. For juniper's affected products, we extract Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) data, Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) classifications, CVSS severity metrics, and reference data to enable rapid vulnerability prioritization and asset correlation. This record contains no exploit code, proof-of-concept instructions, or attack methodologies—only defensive intelligence necessary for patch management, risk assessment, and security operations.
